第二記,令我驚喜的建築。
Royal Ontario Museum.
ROM was originally designed by Toronto architects Frank Darling and John A. Pearson in 1914. It is a Italianate Neo-Romanesques architecture and its structure is heavily massed with punctuated window. The meseum was recently renovated and expanded by architect Daniel Libeskind and Bregman + Hermann Architects. The new design to the old building was bravely and carefully done. I agree that the program of ROM and its site have given the great opportunity for this new dramatic architecture, thus allowing it to become a focal point in downtown Toronto.
It is never easy to work on an heritage building and to design an addition to it. However, I respect Libeskind for having it done so successfully. When I was there in front of and within the building, I felt like someone has given (with respect) the used-to-be-very-famous-old-folk-singer a beautiful makeup and clothing, as well as an upgraded instrument, so that he comes on stage confidently to sing with energy again.
That's how I felt. I am glad that I had the opportunity to visit this building.
