多倫多 三記

第三記,繼續令我驚喜的建築。

Toronto Old City Hall.
It is a Romanesque Revival Architecture, built in 1889.
Needless to say, it is a beautiful architecture with order, which expresses dignity and pride. One does not need to know much to recognize this building as a governmental building. It reminds me of what I read about good architectural design: "A beautiful design must express order. It must also possess quality. It must be skillfully made from appropriate materials. It must also be useful and practical, based on the function it serves." This building is exactly doing it.

The details of this building is breathtaking. It just has this magical attraction to make me to put my hand on the stones when I went closer to it. Moreover, one detail that makes me totally fall for it is its column/capital details (shown on the following picture). I do not know the meaning behind it, but I see it as a sense of humor and freedom of the architect. I would not have imagined such "funny" details for a governmental building which looks so "serious", it adds life to the building - I just love it! Furthermore, I am completely amazed by the craftsmanship, it just makes this Old City Hall proud!

Also, I am more than lucky to be able to encounter the ongoing festival of art & creativity in Toronto - Luminato. One of the installations/performances Redball Project Toronto was being shown at the Old City Hall entrance on the day I passed by. I couldn't help but to think of my dear 小丑騷畸 - well, that's just something personal.
