I finally watched the movie 葉問 last night. I like the movie, and I don't like it; I like it because it is such a gripping movie. I don't like it because it is a very sad story... it reminds me of a movie I watched a year ago, The rape of Nanking. More specifically, it reminds me of its theme song and its author, Iris Chang, who committed suicide because of continually suffering from depression - she was "deeply disturbed by much of the subject matter of her research" (wiki) for the work in Nanking.
To be honest, I am a person who knows almost nothing about politics and history. This post is not to remind nor to discuss any war related or politics related issue. It is simply a post out of emotion.
Listening to the song again and researching on Iris Chang again, I am once again reminded how powerful words can be, and how powerful music can be... it can seriously touch the deep down inside of one's heart when it is carefully done.
Now, what do you want to write about? What do you want your music to speak of? What are you producing? And... what am I doing?
song: a song for Iris
Just a little child
They took it all away
Your blood, your life
Your trust, your faith
You died, reborn in pain
Red as the river;
Looming large, the gate.
Darkness in your heart, drowning in hate.
I'll dedicate my life to get your stories told
I'll give voice to the voiceless
(Silenced for too long)
Crying out for justice
(Silenced for too long)
Trust me with your pain
I'll take it as my own
I'll fight to get the truth told
My weapon is my word
One more time, remember.
The horror, the pain
They raped you of your pride
Robbed you of your dignity
Speak of how they stole your peace
Screaming to cease
It's done. The page’s filled
With blood and tears
Not in vain
The world will finally hear
I gave voice to the voiceless
Now I'm silencing my own
What I’ve left behind, remember
In you, my spirit lives on
Find my light
Pass it on
Find my light
Pass it on
